What is true morality?

What is true morality?

KEY BIBLE VERSE: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21)

Morality is being committed to eternal values. Jesus contrasted heavenly values with earthly values when he explained that our first loyalty should be to those things that do not fade, cannot be stolen or used up, and never wear out. We should not be fascinated with our possessions, lest they possess us. This means we may have to do some cutting back if our possessions are becoming too important to us. Jesus is calling for a decision that allows us to live contentedly with whatever we have because we have chosen what is eternal and lasting.

KEY BIBLE VERSE: But many who are first now will be last then; and some who are last now will be first then. (Matthew 19:30 )

Morality is following Jesus with humility. What many people call acceptable behavior Jesus rejects as unacceptable. Consider the most powerful or well-known people in our world—how many got where they are by being humble, self-effacing, and gentle? Not many! But in the life to come, the last will be first—if they got in last place by choosing to follow Jesus. Don’t forfeit eternal rewards for temporary benefits. Be willing to make sacrifices now for greater rewards later. Be willing to accept human disapproval, while knowing that you have God’s approval.

KEY BIBLE VERSE: For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) (Romans 2:13-15 )

Morality is possible only with God’s help. If you traveled around the world, you would find evidence in every society and culture of God’s moral law. For example, all cultures prohibit murder, and yet in all societies that law has been broken. We belong to a stubborn race. We know what’s right, but we insist on doing what’s wrong. It is not enough to know what’s right; we must also do it. Admit to yourself and to God that you fit the human pattern and frequently fail to live up to your own standards (much less to God’s standards). That’s the first step to forgiveness and healing.

KEY BIBLE VERSE: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2 )

Morality is conformity to Christ. Christians are called to “not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,” with its behavior and customs that are usually selfish and often corrupting. Many Christians wisely decide that much worldly behavior is off limits for them. Our refusal to conform to this world’s values, however, must go even deeper than the level of behavior and customs—it must be firmly planted in our mind—”be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” It is possible to avoid most worldly customs and still be proud, covetous, selfish, stubborn, and arrogant. Only when the Holy Spirit renews, reeducates, and redirects our mind are we truly transformed (see Romans 8:5 ).

Hey BB I know you want to see that other thread carry on after admindude locked it. I only have one thing to add. ;D

Our atheist came back to say that he would really really sacrifice his life for others. Of course this stands exactly opposite as to his statements on what morality is. His answer is that morality is handed down genetically. Trouble with that is that it contradicts Darwin's theory of the survival of the fittest.

It's true, every civilization no matter how remote and away from the rest of the world has had a god or supreme being they worshipped. Somehow the deference of right and wrong is instinctually known to man.
