Luke 7:6-7 King James Version (KJV)
6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

Luke 7:6-7 Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

6 So Yeshua went with them. He had not gone far from the house, when the officer sent friends who said to him, “Sir, don’t trouble yourself. I’m not worthy to have you come under my roof — 7 this is why I didn’t presume to approach you myself. Instead, just give a command and let my servant recover.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

6 Jesus came all this way and the centurion don’t let him in his house, this is likely because him being Gentile he knew that Jesus coming into his house would make the people become ritual unclean. One thing for sure is that he wasn’t keeping apart of his life from Jesus that is not what he is doing by not having him come in.

7 He had faith that simply by speaking it that healing could happen. He believed that Jesus is God and believed that His words still had the same power in His words that made the world.

I think you're right Clark, the centurion was very familiar with the Jewish customs concerning Gentiles. And he was obviously a man of great faith in Christ.

Worth noting that  Christ was willing to break tradition to meet with the gentile.  Christ did not hesitate to respond to the  centurions request. His offer of salvation is open to all.
