Why change the definition of marriage when all you have to do is make a simple change in the tax codes?

Is this whole thing about DOMA a red herring?
Can't the same results that the parties are seeking in the Supreme Court decision be much easier accomplished by a simple tax code change?

From what I understand in the lawsuit, a lesbian couple that was married in Canada moved down to United States. When one of the lesbians died the remaining lesbian could not get the tax benefit that she could have gotten if the marriage was recognized by the federal government. In other words this woman had to pay her fair share of her great wealth.

The truth of the matter is this is not about equal rights, it is about making deviancy the norm and acceptable to those that believe in the laws of God. The idea here is that if you are doing something under the umbrella of marriage, it cannot be considered sinful or unacceptable to God. The truth of the matter is a simple change in the tax code would completely alleviate the stated grievances given for the reasons for calling same-sex unions, "marriage".
