Work

"And she said, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.' Thus she came and has remained from the morning until now; she has been sitting in the house for a little while." (Ruth 2:7 )

God wants us to work hard and do our best, even with small and seemingly insignificant responsibilities. Ruth’s task, though menial, tiring, and perhaps degrading, was done faithfully. What is your attitude when the task you have been given does not require your full potential? The task at hand may be all you can do, or it may be the work God wants you to do. Or, as in Ruth’s case, it may be a test of your character that might open up new doors of opportunity.

"He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. So this joy of mine has been made full.
"He must increase, but I must decrease. (John 3:29, 30 )

God gives each person a special job to do. John explained that because God had given him his work, he had to continue it until God called him to do something else. John’s main purpose was to point people to Christ. Even with Jesus beginning his own ministry, John could still turn people to Jesus.

2 Thessalonians 3:8

we did not eat anyone's food free of charge; instead, we labored and struggled, working night and day, so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

Ephesians 4:28

He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need

1 Thessalonians 2:9

Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and toil. We worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to anyone while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.

Don’t work hard only when your master is watching and thenshirk when he isn’t looking; work hard and with gladness all the time, as thoughworking for Christ, doing the will of God with all your hearts. (Ephesians 6:6-7 )

All our work ought to be done with Christ in mind. Paul’s instructions encourageresponsibility and integrity on the job. Christian employees should do their job as ifJesus Christ were their supervisor. And Christian employers should treat theiremployees fairly and with respect. Can you be trusted to do your best, even whenthe boss is not around? Do you work hard and with enthusiasm? Do you treat youremployees as people, not machines? Remember that no matter whom you work for, and no matter who works for you, the one you ultimately should want to please isyour Father in heaven.
