What do they mean by atonement?
« on: October 10, 2012, 11:24:24 am »
"Particular atonement," "limited atonement," or "general atonement," "unlimited atonement," "indefinite atonement." What do they mean by atonement? The word (at-one-ment) is used but once in the New Testament (Rom. 5:11) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. KJV

11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him. HCS

11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation NAS

11 Not only so, but we also rejoice and exultingly glory in God [in His love and perfection] through our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom we have now received and enjoy [our] reconciliation.  Amplified Bible

Most translations use the word reconciliation and not atonement.

Same word translated in the KJV Romans 11:15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?
And again in twice in 2 Corinthians 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

There is a big difference in meaning of these two words. Does this effect the 5 points of Calvinism?

Interesting take.

reconciliation=restore friendly relations between

atonement=reparation for a wrong or injury

I see it as one is the cause (atonement) and the other is the effect (reconciliation)

Reconciliation suggest a prior friendly relationship.

Genesis 25:23 And the Lord said to her: "Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger."

Eph 1:4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will

In Christianity, atonement refers to the forgiving or pardoning of sin through the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion. Essentially by sinning we deserve eternal death but to escape that punishment a "payment" of sorts can be paid and the debt is settled. God requires blood as this payment and God decided to send his Son to die as a one time payment for whomever would accept him as their God and Saviour. The terms you quoted below all change this into differing ways.

Just to muck up the waters the same act of atonement is referred to as ransom on occasions. Example Matthew 20:28

If you go along with Calvin then the act of atonement or the paying of ransom is for reconciliation from a fallen relationship, or a relationship that has become strained.

The Bible is in support of Calvin.

Are you insinuating we were at one point in a righteous relationship with Christ at some point?
